Welcome Back…and welcome to the fifth of the five series podcast I have for you this week, where I am talking about some of the most common mistakes business owners have been known to make in their business. I want you to be aware of these mistakes and take action to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes in your business.

Today, we discuss how important it is to have a strategy in place for your business. You may have a vision in your head of how you would like your business to succeed, but if you don’t have a strategy or a plan for how you are going to get there, you could be wasting a lot of your valuable time when you veer off course, and you could be adding years to achieve your success.

Let’s start with a business plan. Does just the thought of creating a business plan cause you to cringe a bit? I hear this all the time, but I want you to take a second look at how you could create your business plan. If you think your business plan needs to be pages and pages and pages long, think again. Having a business plan means that you are taking the time to map out your thoughts and vision about where you want your business to go. This could simply be one page long as long as you are able to get all your ideas about your business on this one page. Don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be. The goal here is to create a plan and document it. Having a plan in place increases your likelihood of succeeding.

You should also have a marketing plan for your business. After all, marketing is what is going to help your business get sales. Take some time to think about your marketing plan, and again, don’t think this has to be an elaborate plan. Get your thoughts out on paper, and at the very least, you will have a starting point for marketing your business. Is your plan to specialize in a specific industry or niche? If so, document this information. Think about all the ways you plan to let people know about your business and document this as well. Many business owners are afraid to get out there and market their business, but the only way you will generate sales is to make sure people know about your business, so make sure you include this information in your marketing plan.

Once you have your business and marketing plan, you will need to create a strategy to execute these plans. You will want to make sure that you are focusing on everything you have in your plan, and whenever something comes up that is not in your plan, you may need to put that idea to the side so that you are able to continue to meet your goals. Every time you do something in your business, you should ask yourself if it will help you reach your goals. Is it following your plan? If it isn’t, you will need to decide if it really needs to get done or if you need to adjust your plan.

Remember that if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. Create simple plans that help you stay on track, focus on your goals and watch the vision of your business come to reality.
