Welcome Back…We will start this podcast episode by doing a little deep thinking. I want you to take a minute to think about your business. Where did you see your business going when you first started your business? Have you been meeting the goals you set for your business? What were you hoping to accomplish with your business? Why was it essential for you to start your business in the first place? What did you hope to accomplish when you first started your business? Are you proud of who you have become since your business started? Is your business at the level you initially hoped it would be? Just think about these questions for a minute. I know these are a lot of questions, but I want to get your thoughts going about your business. What thoughts are coming up for you as you think about all of these questions? If you answered no to any of these questions and feel like your business isn’t at the level you originally hoped for, I want you to think about why. Why isn’t your business at the level you wanted to reach? Why aren’t you accomplishing your goals? What is holding you back right now at this very moment?
This is the thought I want you to think about during this time together today. This is the thought that is most likely holding you back from reaching your dreams in your business. For example, you might be thinking that you are unable to get additional clients or customers, and this is holding you back from reaching a sales or revenue goal. I want you to ask yourself if the thought you have that’s holding you back in your business is actually a true thought or statement. Most times, when you think a thought, your actions will follow through on those thoughts. Suppose, in this example; you are thinking that you don’t have enough clients or customers. In that case, you may start feeling like you are unable to market to the right people, or maybe you feel like nobody wants to buy what you have to sell, or even worse, that you yourself don’t have the knowledge that your customers are looking for. Please note that these are just thoughts unless you can prove that these thoughts are an actual fact.
I want you to take any of these negative thoughts and turn them around so that you have a positive thought, and these positive thoughts can then lead to a more positive outcome for your business. Sounds pretty straightforward, but you’re probably asking yourself…how? How can I start turning these negative thoughts around and creating a more positive mindset? I want you to focus on these four areas to develop the power of your own positive mindset.
First, I want you to do what you love and create value for others. This should be the purpose of your business. I’m sure you didn’t start your business hoping that you would be creating a business that you dread working in every day. Most entrepreneurs want to go into business doing what they love; they usually leave a job they dislike and wish to have a more rewarding and fulfilling life. When you find what brings you the most joy and focus your efforts on this, you will find that your business and your clients and customers will have much more value.
Next, I want you to concentrate on each and every one of your failures. When you shift your mindset on your failures and start embracing and learning from them as much as possible, you will be more willing to try new things and shy away from holding back. Each time you have a failure, I want you to take some time and ask yourself if there was any part of this failure that was actually successful, and where you can improve the process so that the next time you can try a different approach and get you closer to the success that you are looking for. So many business owners try something and fail and never look back at it again. Most even blame the failure on themselves personally. You want to be the business owner who tries, and no matter what happens, whether you view this as a failure or a success, you dig deeper into the process to see how you can improve for the next time. By being flexible and willing to make changes, you will be able to make pivots in your business as needed. This is what will bring you to the next level. You want to take each experience you have in your business as a learning experience which will help you and your business grow. Remember the quote from Henry Ford; if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. If you want to see change, you need to make changes.
Stop putting your primary focus on money. I know this one can be hard, and believe me, as a Certified Public Accountant, I know what it is like to focus on the money – I work with numbers and money all the time. When you stop focusing on money or how much money you need to make, you will find yourself focused more on creating the value that your customers are looking for. When you do this, you will find that your customers, employees, and other business relationships will improve as you give more without the expectation of receiving money in return. With this mind shift, you will most likely see an increase in your revenues as an indirect impact of how well you are focusing your thoughts on your relationships rather than just money.
Lastly, focus on being grateful. Whenever I see someone sad or having a bad day, I ask them to tell me about three things they are grateful for. At first, it isn’t always a welcoming thought, but as they start thinking and looking for something they are grateful for at that moment, they begin to have a mindset shift as well. Could you do this in your business? This is something you could easily start to practice every day. Before you start your day, or maybe as you end your workday, take just a few minutes to think about what you are grateful for in your business. As you shift your mindset to being grateful, you’ll notice more positive thoughts as well. This is such a simple thing you can do in your business every day, which will help you create that powerful mindset you need to succeed in your business.
I hope you can see how powerful having a positive mindset is to the success of your business.
