Welcome Back…Whenever you lead a business, a team, or a group of employees, you need to have a clear vision of where you want to go as well as each of the individual goals you need to reach to be successful. Successful leaders know their leadership style as well as their strengths and weaknesses so that they know where they can focus their future growth. Most leaders will learn and develop their skills over time, but by mastering the skills you may be lacking now, you will also become a successful leader. These skills are critical for you to acquire. You may find you need to step out of your comfort zone, challenge yourself or take on additional tasks so that you can improve these skills. Know why you want to be a leader in the first place. Do you genuinely enjoy leading others? Do you want to make a difference in the world, or do you want to make an impact? Take some time and think about what motivates you as a leader.

Communication skills are a must and one of the essential skills you need to have to be a successful leader. Whether in person or writing, you need to create good listening skills and have the ability to give and receive feedback from others whenever necessary. You’ll also want to pay attention to not only your body language but your team’s body language so that you can fully understand what others are saying. You will build trust with your team by providing an atmosphere in your business for honest and open communication. An effective leader will connect with others to create good relationships. An open-door policy can be the perfect solution for these situations. Be aware of what people want and always inquire and ask questions if you are unsure.

Being a leader in your business means you are responsible for getting results, and a growth mindset is essential. Have a vision of the bigger picture as well as the strategy needed to execute the processes required to reach your goals. Be proactive and anticipate what will happen. Be open to new ideas and ready for any situation that arises in your business. You also want to be able to think critically so that you can foresee potential problems. By using critical thinking, you’ll help develop ways to prevent problem situations from occurring. Avoid procrastination by tackling issues head-on and work towards making decisions quickly. Find ways you can make good quality decisions in any circumstance. Remain purpose driven even in the most stressful situations. Be resilient. There will always be issues that come up, but by remaining flexible and resilient, you’ll be able to pivot and continue to bring your team and employees along a new course of action to achieve your desired results. Learn from your mistakes. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, but make sure you learn from each mistake that is made. Be genuine and show your team that you are human and are always ready to improve in the next situation. By sharing your obstacles with your team and how you’ll overcome them, you will show them that you are humble as well.

Having the ability to delegate whenever possible will give your team a chance to feel empowered and will allow you more time to enhance your leadership skills and work towards your own goals. You will still want to oversee and ensure your team is following through on their projects or tasks by meeting deadlines and quality standards, but be careful not to micromanage. When you take the time to teach others, you will help them grow rather than giving them orders. A good leader will be able to motivate and energize others on the team and will produce a happier team. Create a positive work environment for your team, make sure that each team member or employee has their own goals that tie into the overall business goals and give them feedback about how they are doing. Challenge others to think and learn new things so that they can continue to grow. Never stop teaching others and ensure that everyone on your team has what they need to help them succeed. Always measure performance and recognize any wins or achievements your team reaches. Be a positive influencer to others and help support them whenever needed.

Have an understanding of your business finances. Know how to read your Balance Sheet and Income Statement and what it tells you about your business. Sharpen your ability to forecast or predict your future sales, cash flows, and profits for your business. An overall awareness of how your business is doing financially will definitely benefit your ability to lead your business. If you struggle in this area, know when to ask for help. This is one of the areas I help my clients with. Accountants and bookkeepers can help you get a grasp on your finances so that you can reach your goals.

Hone in on your own self-awareness. Know your emotional intelligence by being able to recognize, manage and regulate your own emotions as well as others. Be confident and know you are the best person to lead your business. Always look for ways to keep learning, improving yourself, and increasing your personal development as a leader. Challenge yourself to improve by taking the initiative and assessing how you are doing on a routine basis. Think about what is working and where you could improve your skills. Increasing your leadership skills will impact the success of your business, your team, and yourself. Build your professional development with workshops and webinars. Network with other leaders to stay up to date on what’s happening with others in similar roles. You can also volunteer to take on additional responsibilities to grow in areas outside your expertise. Your leadership skills benefit and carry through to both your personal and professional lives. By boosting your leadership skills, you’ll grow as an individual and use these skills to inspire others both personally and professionally.
